Winter Storm Watch issued: Heavy ice, snow on the way

A Winter Storm Watch issued today will be in effect from Wednesday through Friday for what the National Weather Service in Wilmington is calling a “long duration event” with heavy ice and snow accumulation.

Temperatures for Tuesday will be above normal in the high 40s.

Rain will move in early Wednesday, and continue throughout the day before colder air moves in, changing precipitation to freezing rain Wednesday night.

The watch goes into effect at 10 a.m. Wednesday through 7 a.m. Friday for Champaign, Clark, Greene, Miami, Montgomery and Preble counties, issued by the National Weather Service in Wilmington. The watch, issued Monday afternoon, calls for a heavy wintry mix, with possible accumulations of 6 to 11 inches of snow and one-tenth to four-tenths an inch of ice.

The high temperature Wednesday will be 43 degrees, but colder air moves in, changing the precipitation to freezing rain Wednesday night.

The freezing rain is expected to last throughout Thursday before changing to snow, according to the NWS.

Thursday night will bring lower temperatures, falling to around 10 degrees.

The colder weather will remain for Friday and the days to come.
