Dayton International Airport set a rain record Wednesday after a cold front brought widespread rainfall throughout the region for the first day of the fall season.

A record rainfall of 1.71 inches fell on Wednesday; this breaks the old record for Sept. 22 of 1.19 inches, set in 1912, according to the National Weather Service in Wilmington.

The autumnal equinox at 3:20 p.m. Wednesday marked the beginning of fall and is the moment when the sun is exactly above the equator, and day and night are of equal length.
