There will be a break from the rain today ahead of wintry mix bringing ice and snow tomorrow, according to the National Weather Service in Wilmington.

Following a warm, rainy Tuesday, today will be partly sunny and cold with a high around 38 degrees. It won’t be as windy today, and any wind gusts should be isolated.

Tonight will be cloudy, with a slight chance of snow starting soon after dark, with a small chance of freezing rain before dawn.

Lows will be around 27 degrees.

While this first round of precipitation is not expected to be heavy, the timing could impact those heading to work Thursday morning, according to NWS.

On Thursday, the overnight snow chances will rise, mixing with rain around noon before changing to just rain showers in the afternoon as temperatures rise to a high around 38 degrees.

There’s a chance for a lull or decrease in precipitation by late Thursday morning, but by Thursday afternoon rain is expected across the region.

Thursday night will bring a wintry mix, starting with just rain but changing to freezing rain around midnight. Then, during the early hours of Friday, freezing rain will mix with sleet, then change to a mix of sleet and snow, before briefly becoming just snow before dawn.

The NWS said that it expects areas along or near Interstate 70 to get an inch or less of snow and sleet accumulation with perhaps one to two tenths of an inch of ice. Areas further north will see more snow, getting around 1 to 3 inches, and areas further south will see heavier rain.

All precipitation is predicted to taper off early Friday.

During the day on Friday, it will be breezy and cold, with temperatures only barely rising above freezing to around 34 degrees.

Clouds will gradually decrease Friday night as temperatures drop to a freezing low around 18 degrees.
