Tecumseh hangs on to win football opener

FAIRBORN — Motivational speeches won’t be necessary at Tecumseh High School football practices this week. The Arrows were happy to beat Fairborn 21-14 on Saturday, Aug. 29, but they weren’t pleased with the fourth quarter.

A 21-0 lead was reduced to seven points in the space of about four minutes, and the Skyhawks had the ball with 1:26 left in the game. But a deep pass by Ryan Cook was intercepted by Mike McKee and the relieved Arrows celebrated their 12th straight regular-season victory against an improved Fairborn team that was 3-7 in 2008.

Coming off an unbeaten regular season and a second playoff berth in three years, this is a veteran Tecumseh team that expects more of itself.

“We got too comfortable, and we let down a little bit and let big plays happen,” said Tecumseh running back and defensive back standout Dustin Holmes. “We can’t do that.”

Two fumbles set up two Fairborn scoring drives in the fourth.

“The kids were upset — more upset than probably me about how the game ended,” Tecumseh coach Kent Massie said. “They’re a mature group and they work hard. They’ll come out Monday ready to fix the mistakes that they made.”

The mistakes the Arrows made while building a 21-0 lead through three quarters are the kind that only show up on film. Two touchdown runs by quarterback Riley Gault produced a 14-0 halftime lead.

A 27-yard TD run by Holmes midway through the third quarter ended the scoring for the Arrows. Holmes rushed for 88 yards on 13 carries, and the Arrows rushed for 256.

“We’re a little down,” McKee said about the fourth quarter. “But it’s a win. We’ll take it.”
