NEW CARLISLE — The Tecumseh High School football team is ranked No. 8 in the first Associated Press state poll released Monday, Sept. 14.
Tecumseh (3-0) is coming off a 62-0 rout of Miami Trace last week. The Arrows lead the area with 132 points scored, and have allowed 20. They received one first-place vote.
Much of what happens in the first prep poll is based on what happened last season. In 2008, the Arrows went 10-0 in the regular season, finished No. 7 in the final AP poll, then won a playoff game.
They returned many players from that team, and the state poll recognizes those returners.
The state poll is for bragging rights only. The first Harbin points rankings will be released later in the season. Those rankings are used to determine playoff spots.
Two other area teams earned points in the state poll. Southeastern is ranked 15th in D-VI, earning one first-place vote. It’s the first time the Trojans have been ranked in the state poll since 2002.
West Liberty-Salem is 18th in D-V.
Two in a row
Cedarville is 2-1 after beating Yellow Springs 48-14 last week, which matched last year’s win total.
The Indians have been strong in the running game this season. Zeke Young has rushed for a team-high 247 yards with three TDs.
Young and Taylor Kordic each have scored four touchdowns.
League play
The Ohio Heritage Conference begins league play this week.
Two teams made it through the nonconference portion of the schedule without a loss. Southeastern (3-0) hosts Greeneview and West Liberty-Salem (3-0) travels to Triad on Friday.
Around the state
The state had several multiple-overtime games this weekend, including Shawnee’s 26-20 double-overtime win against Urbana.
In double OT: Rocky River beat Westlake 23-17; Canfield beat Dover 22-21.
In triple OT: Chesapeake beat Willow Wood Symmes Valley 39-33; Grafton Midview beat Medina Buckeye 21-14.
