“I think I had 19 text messages talking about us,” Mamer said. “It was pretty neat.”
Wright State lost that game 17-3 and was swept by the Tar Heels in a three-game series, but Mamer is happy to be contributing early in his freshman season.
“It’s been a blast,” he said. “I’ve been fitting in well. I pitched one inning against Monmouth and went one-two-three, and I was just happy to get in the very first game on the very first weekend. Last weekend, it was pretty much a dream come true pitching against North Carolina. I thought I did my job.”
Mamer is currently pitching in long relief.
“It could change throughout the season,” he said. “I don’t know if I’ll get to start this season. I most likely won’t because there’s a lot of starters in front of me. But I’ll have a chance to pitch every day.”
Mamer has already learned a lot about college baseball.
“I’ve learned you have to hit your spots,” he said. “Location is a big-time key. In high school, you can get away with throwing strikes and throwing them down the middle sometimes.”
