Shawn Phillips, who started his high school basketball career at Belmont in Dayton, announced his verbal commitment to North Carolina State on Wednesday.

Phillips shared a video of Twitter that started with photos of him as a kid and transitioned to video of him standing on the court at Wogaman Middle School in Dayton.

“It all started in this gym,” Phillips said in the video, “when hoop became more than just a game to me. I appreciate all the guys who believed in me when I didn’t. I appreciate all my folks: my pops, my auntie, my mommy and whoever else was on my team. Also thanks to all the guys who took the time to work with me to become the player I am today.”

Phillips, a 6-foot-10 center, ranks 98th in the class of 2022, according to Rivals.com. He chose N.C. State over West Virginia and Mississippi, two other programs he put in his final three in August. He’s the first member of N.C. State’s 2022 recruiting class.

Phillips told On3.com he felt the love from N.C. State coach Kevin Keatts during his official visit.

“They were always consistent, texting me and calling me every day,” Phillips said. “Their starting big is going to the draft after this season. So Coach Keatts promised me a starting spot. They obviously like to play around their bigs.”

Phillips attended Belmont until transferring to Ypsi Prep Academy in Michigan in 2020. He announced in July he would attend Dream City Christian in Glendale, Ariz., for his senior year.

On Twitter, ESPN analyst Adam Finkelstein said Wednesday Phillips impressed him with his play this summer.

“Nicknamed Baby Shaq, he’s a true center with the type of intimidating size that can immediately change the game,” he said.
