‘Krazy’ good taco, sugar skull decor make Springfield restaurant worth a visit

Believe the hype about Guerra’s Krazy Taco.

Some tacos are just loco.

Others are just “krazy” good.

That's the case with Guerra's Krazy Taco, a quirky taco shop and bar at 229 N. Belmont Ave.

The much-hyped eatery San Antonio, Texas, native Felix Guerra III opened Jan. 13, 2016 has been on our "try list" for awhile now.

We finally had the chance to stop by the restaurant and bar.

Guerra’s looks like a party outside and inside.

Sugar skulls and skeletons like those associated with the Mexican holiday Day of the Dead (Día de Muertos) decorate tables, walls, the sidewalk and even the ladies’ room.

A novelty sign near our booth read: “Tacos are good for you.”

We are not guaranteeing your go-to healthcare professional would agree, but the tacos at Guerra’s sure are good.

According to a Springfield New-Sun article, the restaurant uses local products and herbs are grown on site.

There are several taco places between Springfield and here.

Heck, there are several taco options near the shop.

Guerra’s sets itself apart with creative Tex-Mex-style tacos packed with bold flavors.

THE FOOD

We jumped into the menu and ordered a round of tasty Guerra’s margaritas.

The menu features a list of appetizers that includes Kreeper Cheese (hot peppers in a melted cheese served with chips); Krazy Bean Dip and beer queso.

We ordered the beef nachos for $7.95 and received a mound of munch-able cilantro, refried beans, beef, iceberg lettuce, tomatoes, jalapenos and crunchy chips topped with the restaurant’s creamy cilantro sauce.

The restaurant has an assortment of tacos with ingredients ranging from candied ginger on the Asian Ginger chicken taco to the fresh pineapple on the Sweet Avocado vegetarian taco to Sriracha on Flex’s Favorite, a seasoned ground beef taco.

Tacos generally range from $2.95 to $3.95.

A “street-style” plate of five tacos with different meats is $9.95.

WE ORDERED THREE TACOS

The star of our plate, the Hot Mess ground beef taco: cheese, ground beef, refried beans and hot sauce (tasted like an open-faced burrito).

The fun-to-eat, savory and spicy Krunch-a-licious: ground beef, hot sauce, creamy cilantro and crunches.

The Notorious P.I.G.: an ample serving of roasted pork, creamy cilantro sauce, lettuce, cucumber, radish and candied jalapenos on two corn tortillas to support all the weight.

An American-style taco, called Traditional on the menu) comes with seasoned beef or chicken, cheese,  lettuce and tomatoes.
