Wright Patt gate damaged in crash, unable to close

A major gateway to Wright-Patterson Air Force Base will stay open 24 hours a day after a vehicle struck and damaged it, making the gate unable to close, a base spokesman says.

Gate 22B off Interstate 675 — which was damaged early Wednesday morning — will begin 24-hour operations today, authorities said.

Another entrance way normally open 24 hours a day — Gate 19B off National Road — will cease round the clock operations and stay open from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, according to Wright-Patterson spokesman Daryl Mayer.

Mayer said it was unknown how long and how much it will cost to fix the damaged gate.

An emergency medical services crew transported the driver to Soin Medical Center for treatment, authorities said. The motorist, a Dayton man who was driving a Dodge Challenger, was issued a traffic citation, according to Sgt. Rod Murphy, of the Ohio State Highway Patrol Xenia post. The incident did not appear intentional, he added.

Additional details were not immediately available.
