Construction began this week on a $313,000 road paving project in Urbana.

Portions of six city streets will be paved as part of the project for a total of about 1.75 total miles, said Urbana Engineer Tyler Bumbalough. The contract was awarded to A&B Asphalt Corporation in Springfield.

The project is scheduled to be completed by July 7, but Bumbalough expects work to be completed before that date, he said.

“I like to get done early, but the warmer the better for applications,” Bumbalough said.

Crack sealing will also be completed on 11 Urbana Streets beginning next Tuesday, depending on the weather. Several of those streets were paved within the last five to seven years, Bumbalough said.

The money comes from both the city’s annual permissive tax share and the city’s capital improvement fund. The Champaign County Engineer’s Office will spend about $55,000 to resurface East Powell Avenue — located near the fairgrounds.

“We were trying to get it done a month before the fair started,” Bumbalough said. “We do projects together sometimes, especially on these border streets. It’s more efficient that way.”

“No parking” restrictions will be in effect in work areas, and violators will be towed. As of Tuesday afternoon, no one had to be towed, Bumbalough said.

The city also recently spent about $85,000 to resurface Taft Avenue, which also included new curb ramps. The Champaign County Commission provided about $63,000 as part of Community Development Block Grant money for the project, while the city paid the remaining $22,000.

The project was completed last week.

“We were happy to get it done,” Bumbalough said.
