He was believed to be in serious condition at the time.
Julie Moore, a Springfield resident who across the street from where the shooting happened, said at first she thought she heard fireworks. She then saw the victim shot in the stomach and the leg.
“Since I was an (operating room) nurse, I asked him to put some pressure on it,” Moore said. “There was another guy there, I said, ‘Put some pressure on it.’ By then all the police were on the way, so I kind of got out of the way.”
Around the same time, police responded to Springfield Regional Medical Center, where a woman said she had been shot at while in her car with two children and an unknown male.
The female victim told police an unknown male was driving her car while she sat in the backseat with her two children. She said a black SUV started following their vehicle and began shooting.
The woman said she grabbed both her children and shielded them from the gunfire. She then rolled out of the car and grabbed her kids.
The woman sustained a possible gunshot wound to her right side. The children were not injured.
Members of the male victim’s family, who did not wish to otherwise be interviewed, said he was expected to be released from the hospital on Thursday.
Moore hoped she helped by being at the scene when it happened.
“Well, you would think it would be traumatizing but from working as a nurse, I kind of went into what needs to be done now mode,” she said. “Like OK, somebody has called 911, OK, how’s he doing, somebody put pressure on his wounds, OK, is anybody else hurt. Where’s my daughter? Police are on the way ambulance is on the way.”
