Springfield police, fire investigate vehicle fire as an arson

Springfield Police and Fire Divisions are investigating a weekend vehicle fire as an arson.

Officers were dispatched around 5 a.m. on Friday to the 100 block of West Johnny Lytle Avenue regarding an arson, according to a Springfield police report.

When police arrived, they spoke with the victim who said around 4:40 a.m. she heard a popping sound coming from behind her house.

“When she went outside to see what the sound was, she found her maroon 2005 Chevrolet Equinox on fire,” the report said.

Officers found the front passenger seat to be burnt and melted.

“Springfield Fire Division firefighters believe that this fire was an arson and that an unknown suspect(s) set the vehicle on fire by throwing something flammable inside the front passenger side window, which was rolled down,” the report said.

No other suspect information was available.

Springfield Police and Fire Divisions continue their investigation into this arson incident.
