She’s hoping our readers will respond once again by donating used bras of any size and color.
According to Laurie VanBrunt, Soma Intimates Brand President, a bra is one of the least donated but most needed items for women in a shelter and makes a big difference to women who are struggling financially.
“I always tell women who bring donations to us that when a woman finds a bra that fits, it makes her look and feel better and helps her morale,” says Whiteman.
No purchase is required. Last time around, bras were given to the Dayton YWCA as well as to shelters in surrounding counties.
Whiteman says she will always remember a gentleman who came into the shop carrying a bag and looking a bit uncomfortable.
“When we asked if we could help him, he handed us the bag and said: ‘She won’t need these anymore.’”
“It brought tears to all of us,” she added. “His wife had recently passed away and he said he was happy he could help someone else.”
The bras can be brought to Soma seven days a week: from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturdays, and noon to 6 p.m. on Sundays. The shop is located at 102 Plum St., next to Chico’s. If you have questions, call (937) 431-1725.
Bras can also be mailed to Soma: 102 Plum St., Suite D 104, Dayton, OH 45440.
The bra donation drive will be held through Feb. 26.
