Sears announces another local location closure

The Miami Valley was once again hit by another round of Sears store closures.

The store in Piqua is scheduled to begin liquidation late next week and close in February as part of Sears’ attempt to rebound from bankruptcy and years of losses. Piqua is one of 40 stores on the newest list, adding to the 142 “unprofitable” stores expected to close near the end of this year and another 46 stores set to close this month.

The department store at 987 E. Ash Street is the only Ohio store impacted by the most recent round of closures, but both the Dayton Mall and Mall at Fairfield Commons Sears stores are also expected to close in November and December respectively.

The only Sears store remaining in the Dayton area is in Springfield.

As consumer shopping habits change, stores have had to adjust. And some haven’t as quickly as others, leading to struggles to attract a loyal customer base and keep up with onlin sales.

While Sears Holdings, which also owns Kmart, has been closing stores for years, it didn’t file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy until late last month.

The closure of Dayton-area Sears store adds to the hundreds of thousands of square feet left vacant at area malls after Elder-Beerman also shut its doors in August.
