Northeastern selects new school board member

The Northeastern Local School District Board of Education has named a new board member, according to Board President Jill Parker.

Jeff Collins was selected from among 20 candidates seeking the position that came open after and replaces Steve Schwitzgable who resigned last month. The board interviewd four candidates.

Collins is a Springfield native who has been working with middle and high school students for over 20 years. He is currently an area director for Springfield Young Life, and has worked at Wittenberg University, Yellow Springs High School and McKinney Middle School.

Collins has lived in the Northeastern school district for 10 years. He and his wife, Helen, who has been teaching for 23 years, have three high school aged children.

“The NELSD board is very happy to announce the selection of Jeff Collins to complete the unexpired term ending Dec. 31, 2021,” Parker said. “Mr. Collins is a career educator and brings a wide range of skills and experiences to the position.”

Collins was sworn-in at a special board meeting on Nov. 5 .

“We were gratified by the number of applicants and appreciate the many people who were willing to serve the district," Parker said.

The other finalists were Vanessa Powell, Fiscal Specialist in the Springfield City School District; Christopher Chapman, Compliance Officer for Wright-Patt Credit Union; and Shawn Kaesar, social studies teacher at Grizzell Middle School in Dublin.

Collins was selected out of the four finalists and will fulfill the unexpired term of Schwitzgable, whose resignation was announced on Oct. 16.

Collins will serve through Dec. 31, 2021 as the seat is up for re-election on Nov. 2, 2021.
