Man pleads not guilty to murder charge related to Springfield shooting

A Springfield man was arraigned Thursday morning in the Clark County Municipal Court on a murder charge stemming from a shooting.

William Portis II, 39, pleaded not guilty to murder, according to court records. He was given a $250,000 bond and remains in the Clark County Jail as of Thursday afternoon.

Multiple officers responded around 5 p.m. on Dec. 12 to the 1200 block of South Center Street for a man who had been shot inside Lil Joe’s carryout, according to an affidavit filed in the case.

When police arrived, they found the shooting victim, identified as Deshon Benton, lying on the floor just inside the front door.

Benton was unresponsive and later pronounced dead at the scene after suffering multiple gunshot wounds, the affidavit stated.

Officers along with the Crime Scene Unit were able to review surveillance video, in which they saw Portis “enter the store with a pistol in his hand,” according to the affidavit.

After Portis enters the store, he appears to argue with another person in the business until he learns that Benton is in front of the store, the affidavit stated.

“(Benton), who had just arrived in his vehicle, enters the store where he is met by (Portis). (Portis) raises his pistol and opens fire on the victim, causing him to fall to the floor. (Portis) shoots (Benton) several more times then exits through the front door,” the affidavit stated.

Officers were able to identify the person in the video as Portis, and a warrant was requested for him for murder. He was arrested around 1 a.m. Thursday morning, jail records show.
