Ralph and William Hunt grew up on the Hunt Farm, the former Simon Kenton Homestead.

When the Civil War began Ralph volunteered promptly and was captured at Bull Run in September 1861 and was imprisoned within Libby Prison in Richmond.

Upon his release he returned to duty, eventually achieving the rank of Major. After finishing college, his younger brother William joined the cause and their sister and mother also did their part working with the Sanitary Corps and the Soldiers Aid Society.

When the brothers returned home, they stored their tent and other items in the homestead attic where they were discovered decades later in impeccable condition.
