Motorcyclists will be allowed to wear earplugs or earphones while riding on Ohio roadways, under a bill signed by Gov. Mike DeWine on Friday.

The bill unanimously passed the Ohio House and Senate earlier.

Advocates for the bill argued that it’s a means to protect riders’ hearing from wind noise.

American Bikers Aimed Toward Education of Ohio, Inc., American Motorcycle Association and Motorcycle Riders Foundation supported the bill.

State Rep. Riordan McClain, sponsor of the bill, said the legislation is about freedom and safety. He said in testimony that riders experience 80 to 105 decibels at highway speeds caused by wind noise alone.

Earplugs will reduce the effects of wind noise while still allowing riders to hear sirens, car horns and other sounds, he said.
