Michael Joseph, 27, was charged with endangering children. He pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Springfield police began their investigation on Nov. 1 when they were called to a home because a child was injured, according to an affidavit filed in support of the charges.
“Upon arrival, officers spoke with (a woman) who stated that her son had a suspicious injury and needed to go to the hospital for treatment,” the affidavit says.
Later that day, Springfield police were contacted by children services due to the large bruise to the face, the neck and ear of the child, the affidavit says.
On Nov. 4, law enforcement asked that the child be taken to Dayton Children’s Hospital to be examined and officials there had concerns from the bruising that was seen and the story that went with it and how the injuries didn’t match.

The concerns by the medical officials caused Springfield police to interview the adults around the child, the affidavit says.
“All parties agree that Michael was the only adult at home with the child victim at the time of the injury,” the affidavit says.
“Michael stated that he was in the bathroom when he heard a scream and went into the bedroom to find the child hanging upside down, almost balancing on his thighs, about to make the four-plus footfall to the floor,” the affidavit says.
Investigators went into the bedroom with Joseph so he could explain exactly what happened, the affidavit says.
“Michael showed me with a toy exactly how he found him and based on that, I told Michael that if that is how you found him, then I would expect the bruising to be on the other side of the face,” the affidavit says. “He agreed, but said that was how he found him.”
Joseph denied striking the child or causing any harm.

2. Springfield man accused of running away from deputies, also suspect in bank robbery
Police released pictures to the public this week of a man who robbed the NCF Savings Bank on Villa Road on Oct. 30 — police now say the suspect is 39-year-old David Judy.
Witnesses described the suspect as a white man wearing a floppy, dark hat with a bandanna underneath and dark sunglasses. He also had a tattoo of a clock on the top of his left hand.
Police say the man passed the teller a note claiming he had a gun and demanding money. He stole money from two tellers before running out the door.
Tuesday afternoon, Clark County deputies were looking for him in a Delaware Avenue basement in connection with a nearby burglary. According to court documents, deputies found him underneath a table with a blanket over him.

He was handcuffed and taken upstairs — but then he made a break for freedom. A deputy tackled him to the ground and put him inside a cruiser.
But on their way to the sheriff’s office downtown, Judy was able to escape through the back seat window — still handcuffed.
The deputy chased him down again, but that landed Judy in front of a Clark County Municipal Court Judge on Wednesday morning facing two escape charges.
Not guilty pleas were entered for Judy for the escape charges, and Judge Mel Kemmer set his bond at $10,000.
Police said they are filing charges against him for the bank robbery.

3. Springfield man charged, accused of trying to escape police
Ronald Johnson, 25, was charged with escape, having weapons while under disability, carrying a concealed weapon, improperly handling firearms in a motor vehicle and obstructing official business. He pleaded not guilty and his bond was set at $25,000.
Johnson is accused of having a loaded 9mm Taurus G2c concealed in his sock during the incident.
An affidavit filed in support of the charges says Springfield police began their investigation Friday at around 2 a.m. when they saw a vehicle in the area of South Lowery Avenue and Oakwood Place. Officers found the car’s registration was expired and conducted a traffic stop on West Pleasant Avenue near South Center Street, according to the affidavit.
Johnson was a passenger in the vehicle, the affidavit says.
“Officers removed Mr. Johnson and advised him he had a warrant for his arrest,” the affidavit says. “When they asked him to turn around and face the car, he fled from officers in an attempt to getaway. I was able to displace Mr. Johnson’s weight at which time he fell to the pavement. Officers tackled Mr. Johnson to the ground at which point he began to resist officers by pulling away. During the course of this, an officer was injured.”

Johnson allegedly continued to pull away from the officers at which time he was hit with the Taser, the affidavit says, but Johnson continued not to comply.
“The taser did not take effect and Mr. Johnson continued to flee from officers,” the affidavit says. “As he ran, it resulted in him pulling my taser from my hands. Mr. Johnson continued running southbound from West Pleasant Street toward South Center Street.”
An officer was able to catch up with Johnson and take him to the ground, the affidavit says. While doing so, the officer was injured, according to the affidavit.
The man continued to struggle with police, the affidavit says and as a result, a third officer was injured.
Johnson was taken to Springfield Regional Medical Center where he was treated and then prepared to be taken to the Clark County Jail. However, Johnson appeared to try to flee police again, the affidavit says.
“Mr. Johnson broke free of an officer’s grip and attempted to run through the parking lot,” the affidavit says. “A sergeant was able to cut off Mr. Johnson at which time he stated ‘I’m just joking.’ He was then transported to the Clark County Jail.
A next court date in the case has not been set.
