The Texas Tribune reported that the University of Texas System Board of Regents unanimously chose Wilson as its next president of University of Texas at El Paso.
From 1998 to 2009, Wilson was a member of the U.S. House of Representatives, where she served on the House Armed Services Committee, the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence and the House Energy and Commerce Committee, according to the Air Force.
U.S. Rep. Mike Turner, R-Dayton, said in a statement that he hopes to see Wilson serve as the first female Secretary of Defense someday.

“Heather Wilson is a dear friend and former colleague of mine,” he said in a statement. “The importance of her incredible work in the Air Force cannot be overstated. It is not surprising to me that Heather would be sought out by other organizations looking for her strong leadership. I wish Heather all the best in her future endeavors. She will be deeply missed.”
