IRS extends filing deadline to midnight Wednesday because of online troubles

The Internal Revenue Service is reporting trouble with its electronic filing system with just hours left before a midnight deadline for tax returns to be filed.

The IRS is struggling to take returns from third party services and computer programs such as TurboTax, Intuit and H&R Block, reports The Washington Post.

Acting IRS Commissioner David Kautter told lawmakers today that the agency’s electronic filings were experiencing issues but he did not know what the exact cause of the systems problems were.

He did not rule out outside interference such as a cyber attack, The Post reports.

“On my way over here this morning, I was told a number of systems are down at the moment,” Kautter told lawmakers during an oversight hearing on Tuesday. “We are working to resolve the issue and taxpayers should continue to file as they normally would.”

The IRS estimated that 30 million people still needed to file their tax returns today but Kautter said he did not know how many people the outage would affect.

In 2017, around 5 million people used the agency’s electronic filing system to submit their tax returns, an IRS spokesman told The Post.
