Nearly 450 Champaign County school employees received the coronavirus vaccine on Friday.

The districts that had employees that were vaccinated include Triad Local Schools, Graham Local Schools, Mechanicsburg Exempted Village Schools, West Liberty-Salem Local Schools and the Madison-Champaign Educational Service Center, according to the Champaign Health District.

A teacher from Graham said she was glad to get the vaccine.

“I’m glad to get it because I feel like since we’re out in the public, it’s helping us, but it’s also helping the kids we come in contact with,” said 8th grade teacher Lorie Black.

The school districts were able to get the vaccine earlier than planned due to the health district receiving extra doses.

“We were able to receive more doses than we were originally anticipating,” said Health Commissioner Gabe Jones. “With these doses we are able to get a majority of the schools their first dose, which is important to keeping our students in the classroom where they learn best.”

Another Graham employee said she was all for the vaccine and didn’t have any hesitation about getting it.

“If it helps us stay in school and keeps us going normal, I’m all for it,” said guidance counselor Mindy Bechtel.

Urbana City School District employees are scheduled to be vaccinated next Friday.

The district has about 130 employees who have registered to be vaccinated, according to Superintendent Charles Thiel.

“Although this is only the first step, we are happy to be able to begin the process of having interested staff members be able to get the vaccine. We have a number of staff members who have health conditions, which may cause long-term issues if they end up with the virus,” Thiel said

School districts in Clark County will be receiving the vaccine during the week of Feb. 8, according to the Clark County Combined Health District. The health district said the county will receive 2,700 doses for K-12 employees but they’re not sure when.

Staff and personnel at 500 K-12 schools are scheduled to receive their first dose of the coronavirus vaccine next week, Gov. Mike DeWine said. The goal is try to get students back in school by March 1.
