The Salvation Army of Springfield has received a donation of $7,000 from the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3660, which will be used to fund its Strikepoint Program for one year.

The Strikepoint Program is a relational initiative that is intended to provide assistance and remove obstacles for hundreds of homeless individuals, according to Ryan Ray, development director of the Salvation Army of Springfield.

“This program … helps expose the underlying need in these guys’ lives,” Ray said. “We hope that they begin talking, opening up, and start seeing the walls crumble.”

As part of the program, men from the Heartly House are taken out for a meal and entertainment and may also be provided with work boots and bedding, according to Ray.

“Ultimately what we want to see is these guys become productive citizens of the community,” Ray said.

The grant money was entirely raised by the VFW through fundraisers, according to Charles Hornar of the VFW Post 3660. Upon discovering excess in its charity account, the VFW voted to donate proceeds to the Salvation Army, Hornar said.

“We are honored that they trust us with their money and their investment,” Ray said.

Hornar said that VFW members are happy to see how the program benefits underprivileged individuals.

“If we help one person out of all those people, it’s worthwhile,” Hornar said.
