Police began their investigation when they were sent to the 100 block of South Fountain Avenue in reference to a small child who was found alone.

“The child appeared to be dirty and was wearing a full and dirty diaper,” the report says. “(The person who found the baby) advised that she was on Linden Ave. in the area of the railroad tracks when she saw a small child walking around the tracks. The child was by himself.”

The person who found the child said she waited a few minutes to see if anyone would come looking for him but no one arrived, the report says.

Around the same time, according to the report, Ashlie Lannon flagged down a Springfield fire truck and told the crew that she was looking for a small child. She was told to go to police headquarters, according to the report.

“Ms. Lannon stated that her son, child victim, had opened the door and wandered off. She advised that she went looking for him when she discovered him missing.”

The officers asked about the dirty diaper and evidence they said indicated that the child’s diaper had not been changed in a while, the report says. Both said the child had not been changed that day, the report says.

“The child victim had mild redness and chafing and it appeared that his diaper had not been changed in a while,” the report says.

The child was taken by a family member and the Lannons were arrested on a charge of endangering children, the report says.
