Springfield police began their investigation when they were patrolling Fair Street and Wittenberg Avenue when they observed a 2018 White Chevy Malibu traveling at a high rate of speed, according to an affidavit filed with the charges.

The vehicle began to drive faster throughout the city, the affidavit says.
“…I observed the vehicle fail to stop at the stop sign at the intersection of South Lowry Avenue and West Euclid Avenue before turning eastbound on W. Euclid Avenue,” the affidavit says.
At that time officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop, the affidavit says, and the vehicle turned into an ally.
“At this time the defendant began to move around in the driver compartment of the vehicle,” the affidavit says. “(Officers) began to give verbal commands to the driver to show his hands. The driver then exited the driver side of the vehicle. The driver was immediately identified as Adrian Chilton Jr.”
The officer ordered Chilton to get back into the car, according to the affidavit.
Chilton took off running instead on foot before officers were able to apprehend him, the affidavit says.

“I located a large amount of money and a clear plastic bag inside of Mr. Chilton’s front left pants,” the affidavit says. “The clear plastic bag contained multiple different substances all packaged in separate baggies. There was also a significant amount of cash in multiple bundles and multiple denominations located in Mr. Chilton’s wallet, according to the affidavit.
Officers said they found suspected cocaine and meth in Chilton’s possession.
Also, officers said a two-year child was in Chilton’s back seat and did not have on restraints, the affidavit says.
A next court date in the case had not been set.
