Pulled pork and brisket is a good way to show first responders from the Clark County Sheriff’s Office what they do matters.

That’s according to South Charleston resident Jim Bealer, who bought the sheriff’s office lunch Tuesday afternoon. More than 200 employees got to eat a free meal catered by Rudy’s Smokehouse all paid for by Bealer.

“I’m just tired of people condemning these first responders,” Bealer said. “I don’t know what we would do without them.”

Bealer said recently he was watching television when he noticed his neighbor’s home being burglarized. He called the sheriff’s office and within minutes the suspects were apprehended.

“I want the people to (think) ‘what would you do without the sheriff’s office’” Bealer said.

Clark County Sheriff Deborah Burchett said she appreciates Bealer paying for the meals.

“At first I thought does he really know how many people work at this department?” Burchett said. “That is going to be very expensive for someone.”

But Bealer said he didn’t care because he wanted to show his gratitude.

“It makes me feel safe at home,” Bealer said. “Knowing that I can call and they will be there real quick. Anybody who is a law-abiding citizen should feel that way and appreciate them.”

Burchett said the meal helps the deputies know they are appreciated

“When someone appreciates them this much and to do something for them it brings moral up,” she said. “It’s very important to them.”
