Police headlines: Urbana man indicted in hit-skip case

URBANA - Bobby A. Stewart, 27, of 120 S. Russell St., was indicted by a Champaign County grand jury this week on several charges after being accused of striking the president of Urbana University with his vehicle then fleeing the scene.

Stephen Jones was walking with his wife, Judith, last month in the intersection of Abbey Lane and South Russell Street when a vehicle struck and injured them.

Officers from the Urbana Police Division located Stewart, who provided them with a statement of his involvement.

Court records show Stewart was indicted on 11 counts, including two counts each of tampering with evidence, vehicular assault and failure to stop after an accident.

Additional charges included one count each of driving under suspension, operating a vehicle without a license, having fictitious plates, obedience to traffic control devices and violating the right-of-way rule.

They also impounded his vehicle, which authorities said showed evidence of the crash.

A hearing is scheduled for June 14.
