His wife, Hannah Ferryman, also pleaded not guilty to one count of child endangering.
German Twp. police went to Springfield Meadows Mobile Home Park, 4100 Troy Road, Lot 22, where the Ferrymans live, Thursday morning after someone called 9-1-1 to report that Anthony Ferryman had stabbed the family’s dog.
When police arrived, they found living conditions inside the family’s mobile home they described as “unsuitable and unhealthy for a 3-year-old to live in,” their report stated.
Officers found dog feces, old food and dirty diapers throughout the home. Police said the floor in the home’s bedrooms could not be seen because of trash and clutter.
Children services came to the home and put the couple’s child under the care of his grandmother.
They also found the family pet, Dexter, still alive with three stab wounds on its left side. Agents with the Humane Society Serving Clark County took the dog to a veterinarian.
A vet returned the dog to the humane society Tuesday and it is expected to survive the stabbing and is up for adoption, according to the humane society’s executive director, James Straley.
“He seems to be doing great,” Straley said. “He’s been at the vet all week and has been stitched up.”
The incident left neighbor Kim Harris appalled.
“Sounds like they are not taking care of responsibility on their end like they should,” she said.
Harris said she helped start a group that helps dog owners find their missing dogs around the world. She started a Facebook page called Search for Sassy in 2013, and now it’s grown to have more than 6,000 members. Harris said this whole situation was a lot to take in.
“Absolutely insane,” she said. “There are too many options and too many roads out there to take care of an unwanted animal.”
Straley agreed and added that his shelter’s doors are always open.
“There’s absolutely no reason to take a knife, gun or anything else to your dog,” Straley said. “There are always options.”
Anthony and Hannah Ferryman are both scheduled to be in court next week for pre-trial hearings.
