Manhunt results in arrest of convicted killer, suspect in Springfield assault

DAYTON — A convicted murderer suspected in connection with a Springfield assault and robbery was arrested in Dayton on Friday, March 19, after a two-day manhunt.

The U.S. Marshals-led Southern Ohio Fugitive Apprehension Strike Team arrested Derrick Lamont Caldwell in the 500 block of Blanche Drive at his sister’s residence.

Caldwell, who is registered as a sex offender in Montgomery County, was wanted on suspicion of robbery, abduction and assault in connection with crimes that occurred last week, said Jeremy C. Rose, Deputy U.S. Marshal.

Besides being on parole for an aggravated murder conviction, he also has convictions for two counts of rape, abduction, felonious assault and kidnapping. It is believed that Caldwell was driving a stolen vehicle and had stayed at various hotels in the Springfield area before his arrest.

Caldwell was arrested without incident. He’s now in the Montgomery County Jail and awaiting a court appearance, Rose said.

The strike team is made up of federal, local and state agencies including the Dayton Police Department, Springfield Police Department, Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, Clark County Sheriff’s Office and the Ohio Adult Parole Authority.
