Man charged with domestic violence, leading deputies on 100 mph chase

SOUTH VIENNA — A South Vienna man is in custody after he allegedly threatened a woman, drove toward Clark County Sheriff’s deputies in a “threatening manner” and led them on a high-speed chase early Friday morning, Aug. 20.

Prior to the chase, Michael L. Arnold, 27, of the 11000 block Broadgauge Road, crashed his gray Jeep Cherokee through a guardrail, causing the car to go airborne, and drove at deputies responding to a domestic call at Arnold’s home, according to a press release from the sheriff’s office.

The suspect then veered away from deputies and fled west on Broadgauge Road, driving recklessly at speeds in excess of 100 mph, before losing control of the vehicle at the intersection of Broadgauge and Ohio 54, and crashing into a cornfield, according to the release.

The high-speed chase lasted about 120 seconds, said Sheriff Gene Kelly.

“Thank God there wasn’t a car or truck in the intersection or we’d have a fatal,” Kelly added.

Arnold was not injured and was taken into custody by the Ohio State Highway Patrol. While in custody, Arnold blew 0.17 on a breathalyzer test, according to the incident report.

The legal blood alcohol limit for driving is 0.8.

Arnold was then transported to the Clark County jail.

Deputies were responding to a call from a woman Arnold knew around 12:45 a.m.

Arnold called the woman and said he was coming to her residence to assault her, according to the report.

Arnold also threatened to kill the woman over a litter of Great Dane puppies, according to the report.

Arnold is charged with domestic violence, telecommunications harassment, felony obstructing official business and felony fleeing and eluding.

He is also charged with OVI, driving under suspension, open container in a motor vehicle and stop sign violation by the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
