LOGAN COUNTY — A 40-year-old Amish school teacher is dead after she was struck by a car while riding her bicycle on County Road 101 in McArthur Twp.

It was just after 6 p.m. Friday when witnesses called 911 saying a woman “may not have a pulse” after being struck by a vehicle.

The victim, Martha Miller, was only about a mile from her home when her bicycle was rear-ended. She was wearing reflective gear at the time, said Logan County Sheriff Andrew Wilson.

“She was wearing a reflective vest similar to what construction workers would wear when they’re out along the roadway. She also had a working flashing light on the back of her bike,” he said.

Witnesses said a dark green truck or SUV struck Miller, then fled the scene. Through tips, Smith said deputies have located the vehicle — a truck — Monday and received a search warrant Tuesday to begin processing it for evidence.

There are two pockets of Amish communities in Logan County. Smith said this is the first serious incident in recent memory. Miller’s family declined to talk about the case. Miller was a local teacher for 13 years and was buried Monday at the Belle Center Amish Cemetery. Smith said she was well-known to those in her community.

The sheriff’s office has not named the owner of that vehicle and no one has been charged.
