The Enon Police Department distributed gift cards to local students during a drive thru event because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The Enon Police Department’s “Shop with a Cop” program continued this year in a modified way because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Selected students from Greenon Local Schools received $100 Walmart gift cards through a drive-thru event on Sunday, instead of shopping alongside police officers.

“Shop with a Cop helps afford children and their families a better Christmas,” Enon Police Chief Mike Holler said. “Additionally, it provides a joyful environment for children to interact with law enforcement.”

Approximately 20 students were selected by Greenon Local Schools staff members to participate in the program, Holler said.

In previous years, officers, students and their parents took a school bus to Walmart in Springfield. Each child could spend up to $100, while shopping with the officers, Holler said.

This year, due to COVID-19 concerns, the police department modified the event to eliminate the possible spread of the coronavirus.

Gift cards were delivered to children that could not come to the event, Holler said.
