More than 6,000 people in Champaign County have registered for COVID-19 vaccination in Phase 1b, the first phase open to the general public, according to a statement from the county’s health department.

The Champaign Health District is urging residents who have registered for vaccination to be patient because the county has a limited supply, according to a statement from the health district.

“For instance, this week we have only received 200 doses and we have had over 6,000 people register for Phase 1b,” the statement said.

Gov. Mike DeWine released the vaccination schedule for Phase 1b, a group that includes Ohioans ages 65 and older, K-12 school staff and those with severe medical issues, over a month ago. Ages 80 and older were the first in this phase and began receiving vaccinations on Jan. 19, with the state incrementally expanding the age group to receive the vaccine by five years each week.

Residents 65 and older became eligible to register for the vaccine last week.

As of Monday, 3,230 vaccinations have been given out in Champaign County, according to the Ohio Department of Health. That’s about 8.31% of the county’s total population.

Champaign County had 2,698 cases of the coronavirus as of Monday, according to ODH. The county also had 28 total deaths, according to data from the CHD.
