Community Health Foundation program to deal with winter wellness

The Community Health Foundation is hosting a virtual wellness series to help people cope with the coronavirus pandemic.

It will soon be a combination of grey skies and colder temperatures that dominate the upcoming weeks along with the continuing fight against COVID-19 pandemic. Community Health Foundation (CHF) wants to counter the seasonal blues with hope.

CHF’s second Break for Health virtual series will present “Winter Wellness,” a free Zoom program to help with a variety of local health and wellness experts, topics and even some lightness to counter what’s coming our way. It will be noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 9.

CHF created the virtual series as an alternative to not being able to present its annual Health Expo and other programs. The first Break for Health in October got a strong response, greenlighting more topics.

“It wasn’t just a presentation, it was a conversation is the feedback we got,” said Diane Van Auker, CHF project coordinator. “We’re really excited about this program.”

“Winter Wellness” will address the Christmas season and beyond. Nettie Carter-Smith will again moderate with topics including:

  • Taking care of our mental and emotional health and finding support
  • A cooking demonstration and eating well this winter
  • Facts about vaccinations including the flu
  • A COVID-19 update
  • Ways to stay physically active for little or no cost and staying fit at home, including a yoga demonstration

Van Auker added a big plus is CHF is focusing on local experts and options to address these issues.

“You can come away healthier than when you signed onto Zoom,” Van Auker said. “Community Health Foundation values the relationships with our local partners in health. Participants also liked they could ask questions.”

Plans are underway to continue Break for Health at least every other month virtually and hopefully in person if it can be done responsibly in 2021 with topics including heart health, men’s health and relationships.

“Our goal is to respond to the demands of the times,” said Van Auker.

To register for the program, go to CHF’s website at www.community-health-foundation.org or email Joan Elder at jelder@mercy.com. Registrants will also be entered into a drawing for door prizes.
