2 indicted on charges related to death of missing Champaign County woman

A woman and a man who were arrested and charged in the death of a missing woman found in a wooded ravine near Kiser Lake Road in Champaign County last week have been indicted.

Rodney Rider Sr., 54, and Valerie Rider, 52, both of St. Paris, were indicted in the Champaign County Common Pleas court, according to court records.

Valerie was indicted on aggravated murder, murder, felonious assault, tampering with evidence, gross abuse of a corpse, and three counts of possession of criminal tools, court records show. She was given a $1 million cash-only bond and remains in the Tri-County Regional Jail. Her next court date for a scheduling conference is set for at 3 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 22.

Rodney was indicted on tampering with evidence, two counts of obstructing justice, gross abuse of a corpse and possession of criminal tools, court records show. He was given a $500,000 cash-only bond and also remains in the Tri-County Regional Jail. His next court date has not yet been set.

Both were indicted Monday.

Whitney Hostler, 25, was reported missing after she missed an appointment and had not been in contact with family or friends, according to the Champaign County Sheriff’s Office.

She was last seen around 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 30, leaving her residence in western Champaign County.

Hostler had not been in contact with any family members or friends, and they were concerned for her well-being after she missed an appointment, the sheriff’s office stated.

The sheriff’s office found Hostler’s body on Thursday, Oct. 1, in a wooded ravine near Kiser Lake Road.

The investigation into Hostler’s death then led them to the Riders, who were both arrested around 4:30 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 2.
