To the surprise of nobody, the Ohio Wildlife Council has approved all of the requests made by the Division of Wildlife to enact new rules for 2010 involving walleyes and perch at Lake Erie and crappies in 44 inland lakes.

Instead of walleye and perch limits changing on March 1 as in the past, the new limits will be set to start on May 1. That matches when the quotas for the number of walleyes and perch will be set by the Great Lakes Fishery Commission.

Starting March 1, there will be 9-inch minimum size and a daily bag limit of 30 on crappies at the 44 lakes. All southwest Ohio lakes are included except Cowan, Stonelick, Clark, Rush run and a few other small lakes.

Also, the statewide catfish regulations were extended to the Ohio River. Anglers there will be allowed one channel catfish 28 inches or longer with no limit for channel catfish under 28 inches. In addition, only one flathead and one blue catfish 35 inches or longer may be possessed with no limit for flathead and blue catfish under 35 inches.
