BEAVERCREEK — You don’t have to tell Mary Rita Zeh that life is about the journey and not the destination — she’s got that lesson down.
Zeh and her sister, Theresa Keenan, have plans to take part in the 22nd annual World’s Longest Garage Sale that stretches 654 miles from West Unity, Ohio, to Gadsden, Ala.
The sale will be Aug. 6-9.
The sisters are spending their vacation at the sale, instead of visiting the Outer Banks in North Carolina with family members as they usually do.
“Since some of the family couldn’t go this year for financial reasons, so we thought, ‘Let’s do something fun!’ ” said Zeh, 66.
The pair, who have never been to this sale and do not frequent area garage sales, are busy planning.
Zeh, a Beavercreek resident, is retired from her job as director of nursing in the student center at the University of Dayton. Keenan, 56, lives in Lakewood and is an inhalation therapist at the Cleveland Clinic.
“We’re not looking for antiques, we’re just looking for fun things — anything unusual,” Zeh said. “Although I am always drawn to dishes.”
She added that Keenan has plans to find a moose head to give to one of their brothers. The sisters come from a family of nine kids.
“We are always getting each other crazy Christmas presents,” Zeh said.
The sisters seem game for whatever the excursion holds.
“We don’t mind walking through a field to get to something if we have to,” she said. “We just want to see how far we get.
“It’s all about the adventure.”
