Chamber Music Yellow Springs is reaching out to the public with its Follow Your Heart fundraiser with a film screening and reception on Sunday.

A screening of “Music of the Heart,” a 1999 movie that garnered a few Oscar nominations, will begin at 4 p.m. at the Little Art Theatre, followed by a special wine and food reception at the Winds Café.

Reservations are required for the reception and will be accepted through Thursday, Jan. 22. Admission is $75 a person, $30 is tax deductible, and includes admission to the film, food, wine, coffee and tea.

No reservations are required for the film screening. Tickets cost $10 for adults and $7 for students and will be available at the door.

“We have a two-pronged event. We raise funds to support our mission, but we are also simultaneously doing outreach, making stories about chamber music available to a broader audience through the film,” said Angela Brintlinger, one of the Chamber Music Yellow Springs’ board members.

“Music of the Heart” is based on a true story of Roberta Guaspari, played by Meryl Streep, who earned Golden Globe and Oscar nominations for her performance as a teacher raising funds to continue music education at an inner-city school.

The real Guaspari’s son, Nick Tzaveras, is a cellist in the Shanghai String Quartet, which played the Chamber Music Yellow Springs Series in November 2014.

Brintlinger said funds raised will support the primary mission of bringing high-quality chamber music to a small-town audience, and a secondary outreach mission to give students the chance to meet professional musicians in person and hear them perform and talk about their music.

The Chamber Music Yellow Springs series will return next month with the David Trio on Feb. 15 and Amstel Quartet on March 22. Concerts are at 7:30 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 314 Xenia Ave #1, Yellow Springs.

The season will wind up with the 30th annual Competition for Emerging Professional Ensembles on April 26.

“Our spring event can help launch young groups on their career paths,” said Brintlinger.
