The Springfield Museum of Art has 70 good reasons to celebrate summer 2016.

The 70th Juried Members’ Exhibition embraces community artists and its history. This landmark exhibition will open Saturday, June 25, with an opening reception, 5:30-7:30 p.m.

“It’s a great time to celebrate these talented artists and the legacy,” said Deborah Housh, guest curator.

There will be 120 pieces from 103 artists in this year’s exhibition. These include a number of first-time participants in addition to members with up to 30 years of participation with the youngest age 7 and the oldest 86.

Works will include paintings in oil, acrylic and watercolor, photography, 3-D sculptures, ceramics, mixed media and textile work.

Taking Best of Show and earning a $500 prize was “Cen Fab: Summer Heat I,” an oil on canvas painting by Marlene Steele.

“It’s a time to celebrate this creative community together, like a big family reunion,” said Housh.

Participating artists came from 23 cities as far as Texas. These included 45 from Springfield, 17 from Yellow Springs and six from Urbana.

The 70th anniversary will include other nods to Juried Members history. “The Artist as Teacher” exhibit in the Deer Gallery features the works of many previous participants and founding members.

The Juried Members’ Exhibition will be on display through Sept. 4.

The Museum is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesdays through Saturdays and 12:30-4:40 p.m. Sundays. It is closed Mondays and Tuesdays.
