Young’s Jersey Dairy and Schuler’s Bakery will take the first steps in a joint marketing venture that both area businesses hope will be the beginning of a beautiful relationship. These two thriving businesses were founded and bloomed in Clark County.
On Friday, Schuler’s doughnuts, brownies, and cookies will appear in a Clark County landmark, Young’s Dairy Store, 6880 Springfield-Xenia Road, or Ohio 68. Then later in February, containers of Young’s Ice Cream will fill a frozen display case at Schuler’s newest store at 2968 Derr Road.
According to Young’s CEO, Dan Young, this is just the first step in a cooperative selling venture suggested by Dairy Store Manager Scott Miller.
Miller got the idea while looking for a quality provider of baked goods. When Miller spoke with Peters, the idea grew into an adventure in marketing and creativity.
“I do believe Young’s will use our brownies in their sundaes,” said Schuler’s Executive Vice President of Operations Mike Peters. Peters is hoping the Derr Road Schuler’s will become the convenient location for shoppers to pick up cake and ice cream for parties.
Don’t expect the entire Schuler’s inventory to magically appear at Young’s or visa versa. The inventories will start basic and grow and adjust as the entrepreneurs see which items consumers want at each location.
“It is a good adventure for us to use our strengths,” said Young. While the baked goods are changing at the Dairy Store, some favorite baked items like the Sweet Potato Bread at the Golden Jersey Inn, will remain the same.
Changes at both businesses, according to Peters, will give consumers the convenience they want. He believes that savings in time and gasoline will also be appreciated.
Currently, the doughnuts are sold mostly north of the city in Mechanicsburg, West Liberty, and Urbana, in addition to the original store at 457 E. Main St. and the Derr Road Store in Springfield. A Schuler’s store in London east of Springfield, and a grocery in South Charleston also carry the doughnuts.
Peters will be at Young’s on Friday to greet customers and serve samples. And Dan Young plans to do the same at the Derr Road Schuler’s once the ice cream sales are set up.
“We will work our way into this,” said Young, who will be watching the sales and inventory carefully to see what customers want. “We don’t want to bite too much off at once.”
