With more store closures, online shopping to grow 16 percent in 2018


With thousands of brick-and-mortar stores expected to close this year, online shopping is expected to grow 16 percent this year.

That means e-commerce sales will account for approximately 10 percent of U.S. retail sales in 2018, according to a report by eMarketer. U.S. e-commerce sales will reach $526.09 billion, representing 10 percent of total retail sales.

Total U.S. retail sales will grow 3.7 percent to reach nearly $5.3 trillion.

More people are using their smartphones to shop too. Mobile shopping will continue to increase, reaching $208.29 billion in 2018, up more than 32 percent compared to 2017. Mobile sales will account for half of e-commerce sales by 2020, according to the report.
