Sutton’s grocery store closing location

The Sutton’s grocery store in Union City will close at the end of this week.

The last day for the Darke County store will be Friday, closing at 7 p.m., according to a message owners Josh and Shala Urlage and Kirby and Lori Sutton posted on Facebook.

“It’s solely based on the fact that we can’t compete…It makes us very sad that we have to but it’s due to matters that are beyond our control. We tried for two years and we want to thank all of our loyal customers that served us,” Lori Sutton said.

The Sutton’s family opened the location in September 2017 at a former Marsh grocery store.

During the three months the grocery store was closed while the Sutton’s worked to buy it, customers made other shopping habits that were hard to break, Sutton said. The store over its two years wasn’t able to win back all the customers.

The store is open 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. today, Thursday and Friday. Sutton’s has about 40 employees, she said.

Sutton’s also has a store in Arcanum. The owners have been working with experts to determine how to keep that store operating, Sutton said.

The Arcanum store was started in 1934 by Kirby Sutton’s grandfather, making Kirby and Lori third generation owners and Josh and Shala fourth generation owners.

“Right now we are focusing on our Arcanum store because that is our main store, our legacy store,” Sutton said.
