The City of Springfield is looking to work with a regional developer as it seeks to fill the former Kroger building on South Limestone Street.
City commissioners with be asked on Tuesday to allow its city manager to execute a letter of intent with Dillin LLC to aid in the redevelopment of the former Kroger location, which closed in March.
The closure of that Kroger has led the surrounding area to be classified as one the largest food deserts in the city.
Springfield officials are working with the Clark County Land Reutilization Corporation to come into ownership and maintain that property. That process is expected to be completed by the end of July, said Tom Franzen, the director of economic development for the city.
He said that Kroger has donated that property to the land reutilization corporation, also known as the land bank, and the city hopes that another grocer will occupy that space in the near future.
As part of a virtual city commission meeting on Tuesday that will start at 2 p.m., Franzen will be giving a presentation along with Larry Dillin, the president of Dillin LLC.
Dillin is expected to work with the city in its search for interested parties who may buy or lease the former Kroger building.
He is also expected to aid in the process of redeveloping another property under city ownership which is located at 1841 Clifton Avenue and adjoins the Kroger property.
Franzen said the city and the developer plans on holding a series of forums designed to get public input regarding what the community would like to see in the former Kroger site.
