The office supply business was relocated from 234 W. Columbia St. as part of the development of the Springfield Regional Medical Center campus.
Owners Joe and Julie Garrigan look upon their move as an opportunity, not a problem.
The couple chose to reuse an existing space, beautifying and upgrading it. They were excited to tear up part of the parking lot to create a green space they hope will become a mini-oasis of sorts.
“This helps create a sense of place and belonging,” Julie said, “and it changes they way (downtown visitors) feel. Business landscaping and space are major influences on community pride.”
Reinvestment for the project is $1.2 million, with $953,000 coming from the sale of the former location.
The company also recently received a $10,000 facade improvement grant from Center City Association.
The most evident change will be the lack of a retail store, which came about in part because of a dramatic shift to online, telephone and fax orders that are then delivered. Garrigan’s has an on-site warehouse and will accept walk-in business.
Lynn Fisher, responsible for most office supply purchases at Danis Construction, has been a customer for five years.
Working in Miamisburg, she orders every few days. “I’ve dealt with other office supply companies and ... Garrigan’s customer service is unmatched,” she said.
In a move to help create the next generation of downtown business people, the Garrigans started an internship program a couple of years ago.
Working with students from Wittenberg and Cedarville universities, the Garrigans have implemented a sales coaching program that includes education and in-the-field experience.
There are currently five interns among the staff of 16.
“Our customers are getting younger,” Joe said, “so we need to be in touch. ...We run college seniors through the program, teach them about selling, then turn them loose. They open doors and show us new things.”
