Ohioans buoyed by job gains and lower gas prices are expected to spend 4.5 percent more in holiday retail sales this year, but the Miami Valley area is projected to lag the rest of the state and spend slightly less than last year, University of Cincinnati researchers said Monday.
The Economics Center at UC, in a report prepared in conjunction with the Ohio Council of Retail Merchants, estimates that total retail spending in Ohio for November and December will reach $14.5 billion, up $630 million from 2013. The 4.5 percent projected increase tops the national estimate of a 4.1 increase from the National Retail Federation.
Shoppers in the Columbus and Toledo areas are forecast to spend 6.3 percent more this holiday season, while the Cincinnati area, in which researchers included Butler and Warren counties, will see a 5.1 percent increase, the UC report said. But the Dayton region is expected to see a 0.8 percent drop in holiday retail sales — the only metropolitan area in the state to face a projected sales drop.
Michael Jones, director of research for the UC Economics Center, said the Dayton region — which the study defined as Montgomery, Greene, Miami and Preble counties — suffered job losses, based on seasonally adjusted jobs data, between August 2013 and August 2014, which dampened researchers’ expectations for this region’s holiday sales.
U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics jobs numbers have shown recent employment gains in the Miami Valley region, but Jones said seasonally adjusted jobs numbers show a loss of about 1,000 jobs in the region compared with an overall statewide gain of 30,000 jobs.
The improving jobs outlook, a jump in consumer confidence and lower gas prices are setting the stage for strong holiday sales statewide, Jones said. That would be good news for retailers for which holiday sales can make up as much as 30 percent of annual sales. And consumer spending drives about 70 percent of the nation’s economy. Last year, the UC researchers predicted a 3.5 percent increase in statewide holiday sales, and the actual rate of increase reached 4.7 percent.
Shoppers at the Upper Valley Mall in Springfield also seem to be waiting for the special offers, said Brenda Labonte, the mall’s general manager. Sales have been steady so far this month following a “very good October,” Labonte said.
Multiple retailers are banking on “Grey Thursday” as well as “Black Friday” sales to help jump-start the final holiday push. The Thanksgiving-Day openings include Kmart and Meijer at 6 a.m.; hh gregg at 4 p.m.; JCPenney, Toys R Us, Best Buy and Dick’s Sporting Goods at 5 p.m.; and more than a dozen, including some of America’s largest department stores, at 6 p.m.
Labonte said with the Upper Valley Mall’s anchors opening on or before 6 p.m., mall officials gave smaller specialty stores the option to open on Thanksgiving Day, and a “good variety” of those shops chose to do so. The anchor stores will remain open through 10 p.m. on Friday, the mall manager said.
Dave Duebber, general manager of the Dayton Mall, said foot traffic has been strong in his mall the last few weeks, although some retailers sense that shoppers are waiting for the holiday sales before opening their wallets. Overall sales in the Dayton Mall were flat in October, but rose in July, August and September, Duebber said.
At the Greene Towne Center in Beavercreek, multiple stores and restaurants are opening at various times throughout the day, and the Cincinnati Premium Outlets in Monroe will open at 6 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day and remain open for 28 consecutive hours, through 10 p.m. on Friday.
