Mercy-Health Springfield’s birthing center receives national recognition

The Family Birthing Center at Springfield Regional Medical Center has received national honors as it was added to a list of specialty care programs endorsed by the Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield in Ohio.

The center, part of Mercy Health-Springfield, was recognized with a Blue Distinction Center for Maternity Care by the insurance provider as part of the Blue Distinction Specialty Care program.

“There are few things more special than welcoming a new baby. Mercy Health – Springfield Regional Center’s Family Birthing Center team is dedicated to providing your family with high quality maternity services in a warm and caring setting,” said Mercy Health- Springfield President Adam Groshans in a news release..

“We are proud that Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield in Ohio has recognized the work we put in to meet rigorous Blue Distinction Center quality selection criteria for maternity care set by the Blue Distinction Specialty Care program,” Groshans said.

The Blue Distinction Centers for Maternity Care program evaluates hospitals on quality measures for vaginal and cesarean delivery, the release said. Over 1,000 hospitals across the nation have been designated as Blue Distinction Centers for Maternity Care.

Designations are assessed using a combination of information released by associated hospitals and cost measures derived from medical claims filed by companies associated with Blue Cross and Blue Shield, according to the release.

“The Blue Distinction program is designed to recognize commitment to quality and to help consumers identify high performing health care providers. This is a well-deserved honor and I congratulate the entire team at Mercy Health - Springfield.” said Dr. Barry Malinowski, the medical director for Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield in Ohio.
