Hospital system changes its name

The parent company of Community Mercy Health Partners has officially changed its name.

Catholic Health Partners, Ohio’s largest health system and fourth-largest employer, will now be known as Mercy Health.

Springfield Regional Medical Center in Springfield and Mercy Memorial Hospital in Urbana are part of the Community Mercy Health Partners network.

“We are excited about our individual markets serving our patients under the unified name of a system that is a national leader in quality, safety and cost-effectiveness,” said Paul Hiltz, Springfield Market President and CEO, in a statement. “While people in our community will start to see the Mercy Health name, our hospital names – Springfield Regional Medical Center and Mercy Memorial Hospital — remain the same.”

The name change illustrates the system’s concerted effort to work as a collective unit across its seven markets to increase the sharing of best practices to increase efficiency and eventually lower costs for the patient, said Maureen Richmond, spokeswoman for Mercy Health.

“The name change is an outward symbol that we’re working together,” Richmond said.

Mercy Health employs more than 32,000 employees in Ohio and Kentucky. With $6 billion in assets, Mercy Health operates more than 250 health facilities, including 23 hospitals, eight senior living communities, five hospice programs and seven home health agencies, according to the system.

Over the next several years, the Mercy Health name will be phased into all system facilities. This allows patients to retain the trust, confidence and security they currently have in physician, hospital and outpatient facilities that have served their communities for more than a century, according to the health system.

In addition, the group’s website will change to mercy.com.

“We start with our patients at the center of every decision,” said Kristen Hall Wevers, Mercy Health’s chief brand, marketing and communications officer. “Simplifying our operating structure improves our ability to maximize our clinical quality and cost effectiveness, and allows us to improve the overall experience patients and their families have when they seek our services in times of need.”

The system incorporated in 1986 as Mercy Health Care System and changed its name to Catholic Healthcare Partners in 1997. The name was later shortened to Catholic Health Partners to reflect its growing emphasis on preventative care and overall wellness.
