Clouds will increase this evening, with widespread rain overnight into Tuesday evening; the heavy, steady rainfall over already saturated soil will lead to flooding in parts of the region ahead of a wintry mix.

Today is warm and dry with the high temperature reaching 64 degrees in Cincinnati and 62 in Dayton and Columbus. The overnight low will be around 53 degrees with showers, and possibly a thunderstorm are possible after 3 a.m.

A Flood Watch will be in effect from 1 a.m. Tuesday through 6 am. Wednesday for Butler, Clark, Greene, Montgomery, Preble and Warren counties, issued by the National Weather Service in Wilmington. Between 1 and 2 inches of rainfall with locally higher amounts will be possible.

People living in flood-prone areas should be prepare to take action if flooding develops.

The watch is just part of an unusual weather week expected in the region.

Above-normal temperatures returned for the start of the workweek and heavy rain arrives overnight through Tuesday evening. There will be a brief break from the wet and whacky weather on Wednesday before a significant wintry mix and snow system returns Wednesday night through Friday morning, according to the NWS.

The high for Tuesday will be around 60 degrees. Showers and possibly a thunderstorm are expected before 9 a.m. Tuesday, then showers between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., then showers and possibly a thunderstorm after 4 p.m. Rainfall between three-quarters and 1 inch are possible.

Tuesday night, showers are likely with a thunderstorm possible before 10 p.m., then a chance of showers between 10 p.m. and 1 am. Wednesday. Some of the storms could produce heavy rainfall. Overnight it will be much colder with a low below freezing around 30 degrees. New rainfall between one-tenth and one-quarter inch is possible, except higher amounts possible during thunderstorms, the NWS said.

Wednesday brings a brief respite from rain with partial sunshine, but much colder weather with a high near 40 degrees.

Snow showers are possible after 5 a.m. Thursday, possibly mixed with freezing rain, then freezing rain, possibly mixed with snow before noon followed by rain. The daytime high will be about 35 degrees under cloudy skies.

A wintry mix with rain and sleet, possibly mixed with freezing rain mixed with snow and sleet, which could be heavy at times before turning to snow is possibly overnight into Friday morning.

“Details on the exact timing, and potential accumulations of ice and snow, are still uncertain. Please monitor later forecasts for updates,” an NWS statement said.

Friday will be drier with mostly cloudy skies but still cold with a high near 30 degrees.
