SPRINGFIELD — In hiring a head varsity football coach, you want to have a tough choice, and Springfield High School has one ahead of it.
The school released a list of 29 applicants Friday for the job vacated by Rick Robertson, who left after three seasons and two playoff appearances to take the head coaching position at Oakwood.
“It’s an impressive list,” Springfield Athletic Director Mark Stoll said. “There are some quality candidates on there. The committee’s got a large task to select the best fit for Springfield, and I certainly appreciate the number of people who responded.”
Stoll expects interviews to begin next week, and he said the goal is to have a coach hired by June 1.
In addition to four Springfield assistant coaches who applied for the job — Adam Taylor, Danny Dellapina, Chris Wallace and Conley Smoot — here are a few of the names that stand out:
Steve Bartlett: The former Southeastern head coach stepped down after leading Carroll to the playoffs last season.
Morgan Cotter: Current head coach at Fairbanks.
Jim Dimitroff: The former North High School head coach has also coached at Catholic Central, South and Wittenberg. He is a Catholic Central graduate, and his kids attend Central. For 12 years, he has been an assistant coach at Upper Arlington.
Steve Evans: The Reynoldsburg head coach resigned last fall after three seasons. He has also been a head coach at Hamilton Twp. and Teays Valley.
Eric Gillespie: Head coach at Richmond High School (Ind.) the past four seasons.
Andy Helms: After five seasons at Chaminade Julienne, he was let go this year.
Jim Place: He led Chaminade Julienne to the state championship in 2002 and stepped down as Hamilton's coach after last season. He has a career record of 223-161-3.
Brian Staats: He resigned last fall after three seasons as head coach at Barberton.
