Shawnee, Tecumseh anxious to compete in D-I districts

SPRINGFIELD — Steve Tincher didn’t think his Shawnee High School golf team had it in them.

He knew his Braves squad was good enough to advance to the Division I districts to be held at Weatherwax on Wednesday, Oct. 14.

He just didn’t expect a sectional title. That’s exactly what he got. The Braves shot 331 in what Tincher called “horrible” conditions at Reid Park on Wednesday, Oct. 7.

Freshman Clark Engle led the Braves with a 76, while Jeff Hall added an 81, Ryan Fisher shot 86, Michael Hogan had an 88 and Derek Tincher shot 90.

“They didn’t make any stupid mistakes,” Steve Tincher said. “We picked a good day to play good golf.”

They’ll look for another big day at the districts, hoping for a chance to advance to the D-I state meet. Three teams and three other individuals not on those qualifying teams advance to the state meet, held at Ohio State’s Scarlet Course on Oct. 23 and 24.

“When you win the sectional, it puts a little extra confidence in the kids,” Steve Tincher said. “We’ve got a lot of talent and we’re young. It will be good to get them some experience.”

Tecumseh finished second at the sectional with a 336, losing to Shawnee by just five strokes. Kyle Furlong and Scott Rogers each shot 83, while Kyle Jeffers had an 84, Zach Rapp shot 86 and Kevin Loney added a 91.

“We’re pretty excited,” said Arrows coach Matt Ehlinger. “At the beginning of the year, we set some goals and we obviously wanted to be at districts and go down there and see what happens. We’re hoping we can all play our best golf on the same day.”

While the Braves and Arrows go in as underdogs to advance as to the state meet, they’ll give it their best shot.

The Braves tee off against three of the top teams in the state — Cincinnati St. Xavier, Moeller and Centerville. But they won’t back down.

“There’s no guarantees the big boys will play well,” Steve Tincher said.

“It’s one round of golf and a lot can happen,” Ehlinger said. “You’ve just got to get the right guys playing well on the same day.”
